Våra kära superhjältar St. George, Stealth och Zzzap är tillbaka i bokform. Efter att ha vunnit stridet mot gänget Seventeens har man tillåtit alla besegrade som tar av sig gängfärgerna att ansluta sig till de överlevande i The Mount. Samhället växer och tvingar fram en utvidgning av området. Utanför murarna härskar fortfarande de levande döda. Patruller ger sig ut i ingenmansland med jämna mellanrum för att samla proviant och andra nödvändigheter.  I The Mount är läget inte helt stabilt, då få ännu litar på de före detta gängmedlemmarna. Så en dag anländer en arméhelikopter. Mot alla odds fungerar en spillra av den amerikanska armén. Med dem finns John Smith, agent vid Department of Homeland Security (DSA) och gammal bekant till Dr. Danielle Morris. Militären är väldigt intresserad av stridsrustningen Cerberus. De erbjuder ett samarbete och att några av superhjältarna följer med tillbaka till deras militärbas.

På basen har man sedan länge utvecklat supersoldater i projekt Krypton lett av Dr. Sorensen.  En av de färgstarkare nya karaktärerna i boken blir kapten Freedom, som har befäl över Alpha 456th Unbreakables first U.S. Army Super-Soldier Company. Men finns den räddning och trygghet som många hoppas på nu när den amerikanska armén äntligen har anlänt? De inblandade har sina egna agendor och bland dem finns en förrädare med en kraftfull och hemlig förmåga. Som om inte alt detta vore nog återkommer en gammal fiende och de levande döda blir återigen brickor i ett spel som leder fram till en våldsam konfrontation.

Den första boken var en fantasifull och välkommen överraskning. När nu författaren återkommer med sina superhjältar i en värld efter zombieapokalypsen är det fortfarande underhållande. I vissa bitar blir det lite av en upprepning, men det gör inget då själva konceptet är så pass unikt. Romanens allra största styrka ligger i Peter Clines förmåga att genom att växla mellan olika personer och mellan nu och då hela tiden håller läsarens intresse i ett fast grepp. Och detta utan att texten känns krånglig eller svårförståelig. Det är skickligt att få läsaren – eller åtminstone undertecknad – att efter bra några sidor acceptera inte bara levande döda utan även superhjältar med de mest otroliga krafter och följa deras äventyr utan att tvivla under läsningen.

Men, och det är ett ”men” som borde sättas i fetstil: i den tredje och avslutande delen som är planerad måste författaren förnya sig lite grann för att det ska bli en lyckad final. Nu har vi läst och uppskattat konceptet – men också lärt oss det och det behövs någonting överraskande för att fungera en tredje gång. Jag har stor tilltro till författarens förmågor och stort hopp om en läsvärd tredje bok.

Our beloved superheroes St. George, Stealth and Zzzap are back. After winning the conflict with the gang Seventeens they has allowed all of the defeated, that has taken off the gang colors to join the survivors in The Mount. Society is growing, forcing an expansion of the area. Outside the walls the living dead still reigns. Patrols go out into no man's land periodically to collect supplies and other necessities. In The Mount, the situation is not completely stable; few can rely on the former gang members. Then one day, an army helicopter arrives. Against all odds, a sliver of the U.S. Army works. With them are John Smith, agent of the Department of Homeland Security (DSA) and old acquaintance of Dr. Danielle Morris. The military is very interested in the battle armor suit  Cerberus. They offer collaboration and that some of the super heroes should follow them back to their military base.

At the base super soldiers has since long been developed in a project called Krypton, led by Dr. Sorensen. One of the most colorful new characters in the book are Captain Freedom, who has command of Alpha 456th Unbreakable first U.S. Army Super-Soldier Company. But is the rescue and security that many hope for now that the U.S. Army has finally arrived true? The people involved have their own agendas, and among them is a traitor with a powerful and secret power. As if this were not enough an old enemy shows up again and the undead are once again pawns in a game that leads to a violent confrontation.

The first book was an imaginative and welcome surprise. Now that the author returns with his super heroes in a world set after the zombie apocalypse, it is still very entertaining. In some bits it becomes a bit of a repetition, but it does not matter much the very concept is so unique. The novel's greatest strength lies in Peter Clines capacity by switching between different people and between now and then, constantly keeping the reader's interest in a firm grip. And this without the story being awkward or difficult to understand. It is skillful to get the reader - or at least me - to after only a few pages to accept not only the idea of living dead but also super-heroes with the most incredible powers, and to follow their adventures, without doubt, during the reading.

But, and it is a "but" that should be in bold type: in the third and final part which is scheduled, the author must make some more innovations for it to be a successful finale. Now we have read and appreciated the concept - but also learned it - and it needs something surprising to run a third time. I have great faith in the author's abilities and great hope for a third book being worth reading.
